With the support of Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown and voters, California is preparing to overhaul decades-old determinate-sentencing laws and make thousands of nonviolent inmates eligible for early parole….
With the department planning to start determining parole eligibility on July 1, a civil rights group claims in state court that prisons officials cunningly tweaked the voter-approved measure and are planning to categorically exempt inmates incarcerated for nonviolent crimes that require them to register with the state as a sex offender. The state “Office of Administrative Law” sounds Orwellian to me.
I heard a news report on NPR the other day that suggested indicated the CDOC’s “exclusions” would even apply to those in prison for a nonviolent felony (e.g., stealing $200 and a pair of Nike sneakers) if that inmate is required to register for a sexual offense that may have occurred years earlier and is NOT the reason for his current incarceration.
Thank you, Janice & ACSOL, for taking legal action against yet another injustice aimed at Registered Citizens.
They want to create their own laws that go against what the public has demanded? Disgusting, worthless bastards that should have their jobs stripped for life, at the bare minimum. If this doesn’t make a normal person’s blood boil then I’d really be concerned about their mental state. These scum of the earth, who know ZERO about what they are proposing (that the law apply to all Except registered citizens) think that they are BETTER than their constituents. They clearly think that they are higher in intelligence than all of these Voters. These are the kind of hateful morons that makes our society Much Worse Off. If any of us can help do something about this, please let us know. We must stop America’s downhill spiral from stupidity like this.
I don’t understand, why do probation officers want these exclusions? The exclusions relate to parole not probation, right?
Janice and company,
Great job on catching the prison officials amending law that was not voted by its citizens. This is tyranny to believe that prison officials can do what they want and disregard what was voted upon.
BTW, this misdeed is proof of evidence that can be used for Bill of Attainder as registrants are being singled out unscrupulously! It isn’t just this. There are many other instances where registrants are singled out. Oh I wished I kept that article in the local newspaper about needed firefighters and how they would allow some persons with violent felonies be able to apply, but all registrants cannot.
